To put it simply
Only Mark Wahlberg could play Detective Dignam, he is best suited for that role and not to mention the fact he grew up in Boston and he gives off that Boston type vibe. (Similar to Johnny Drama in Entourage where he gives off that New York style to the show)
Detective Dignam is a much needed role for the movie, it brings a whole new dynamic to the film, it's similar to Ari Gold's role in Entourage where his mouth of gold is what makes Entourage for people.
Thus put the two and two together
Mark Wahlberg brings the Departed to where it is today. Don't get me wrong, the other actors in the movie are fucking brilliant as well but they ain't got shit on Marky Mark.
Also I probs should've used better parallels but I just got home from uni and I'm in desperate need for a bat.

edit: just saw 21 jump street was based on a tv series, that starred johnny depp.. thats why he cameo'd in the movie lol
