| so i was doing some research and found out that its near impossible for me to import a laser which has a beam stronger than 1mw ( compare 1mw to the 2 dollar lasers you get at the markets) so i decided to build my own. ive pulled the blu ray diode out of my old ps3 and ive started project blue mile. so for this project to be completed i need to obviously run some resistors and a switch if desired. the diode is as small as the head of a toothpick - no joke. the bits i need to solder are smaller. its going to be a major bitch to solder them. blu - ray is not 100% blue, but moreso an ultra violet colour. now with basic science, the colours range from ROYGBIV ( that is, highest wevelength to lowest) that being said, you can see that ultra violet has the lowest wavelength - which also means it has the highest frequency. so higher frequency basically means its more powerful. im sure yall have seen the lasers where they pop baloons and cut through tape real easily. this one should be able to do it. i think, if im going to run it on 4 AA batteried a 50 ohm resistor should be fine, but for a more powerful scheme with a 9v battery i need to run something like this: ( circuit above is from http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/Blu-ray/site1/diode.html ) simple setup yet very annoying. jackyboy, im sure you did some ECTE subjects. help me out, does that circuit look okay? anywya will be posting pics soon. EDIT: heres a better pic.

| yeah, tool wise all you really need is a soldering iron and some solder... which i have. i suck ass at soldering though | |

| Solderings a bitch to do, especialy on small shit, I fixed a headset resently, had to melt the plastic covering around the wires then rewire it and solder it. Tedious shit | |

| Maybe, I can help Murat. Do you want to know if a 50ohm resistor will be fine for your setup with the 4AA batteries? In the above diagram what voltage does the adjustable regulator run at? With the 4AA's in series, that 6V (adding cells in series)/50ohms is 0.1A or 120mA. Which according to your diagram - Quote :
- Values shown for 125mA Blur Ray
will be absolute bananas, but if you wanted to get pedantic (sp?) and get 125mA, you would need a 48 Ohm resistor but i doubt theres such a thing. I say all this muri, without regarding the Voltage regulator, because I dont know, how you intend on adjusting it? if you leave it to gegulate your 6V, you'll be fine and you'll safeguard yourself against blowing up BLU RAY Diode. Then again, maybe I cant help. If you heatshrink everything as you go, you might be able to mount it in a small pipe, maybe PVC or something!

| Cheers for that beer. So a 50ohm resistor should be fine? I understand it all I just don't know why I need that capacitor and diode. And I also have no clue why there is a regulator there ... What that lm317 thing do? Why do I need it? In going to run it off either a 9v battery or I might get one of those large 6v batteries... Which do you reckon tanky? | |

For a 6V Application, yes! - Quote :

In regard to the capacitor, I'm not 100% sure, either used to store charge, so the drain on the battery isn't so dramatic, or used as a filter. Typically a didode is used as a protective device, but in this case i'm not sure, it might be a rectifier, seeing as it is in paralell. WOuld be interesting to see how many volts AC or DC you have across each component on the finished product. - Quote :

It's voltage regulator, you will have to find out, at what voltage it needs to be run from one of those websites you listed! - Quote :

Personal preference here, you've got to weight up, weight vs replacing batteries more often vs portability.... Something to think about two 9V's in paralell, will give you heaps of grunt to cut through tape!

| speaking of lasers, heres the laser lab i worked ing for my 300 level research project. It had a couple of sweet lasers in it. Including Infra-red you cant see it, it just blinds you. | |

| nice man, cant wait to do 300/400 and 900 level subjects, crazy equipment!
also laser is well on its way, all i need now is a small module to put it in and some time to solder everything.

| Hey guise, anybody got any ideas for electrical type projects, they've ever wanted to build, im craving to build something. Last thing i built was two cardio sleds 8 months ago. What have you always wanted to make? All I can come up with. - Custom Ipod dock with amp/sub/speakers in a box
- Putting a dvd burner in my laptop or modding my pc somehow.
- Something badass with microprossesors, dunno what though. Convert all my home appliances to bluetooth and control them via my pc...haha
What got me thinking was Sammy, the sudanese terrorist at work is building a missile guidance system using microprossors and now i got itchy feet.

| how bout some lasers?
if you want the real deal, grab 500 remote controllers and build NVG's wth them. thats a project.
